Interview - Hints & Tips

    Kiddieland Job Fairs

When:

We are not planning on having any Job Fairs

that are open to the public.  Job Fairs will

be by invitation only to those individuals who
have applied on-line and have been pre-
        screened by our personnel department.

Where:     Applicants will be given instructions on
where to go when they are invited.

What to Expect at one of our Job Fairs

Most of our Job Fairs are for applicants that have submitted applications on line or at a school recruitment.  Whether you have been invited to one of our job fairs or if you are a "walk-in", remember you are being evaluated from the moment you walk in the door.  We are looking  for the "Best" candidate for our team and we want to see how you; carry yourself, whether or not you read signs and follow directions and even how you fill out your application. Each applicant has the possibility of speaking with up to four Kiddieland Team Members.  We try and give each applicant adequate time to be successful in the process and if the Job Fair is heavily attended some applicants may be here for quite a while waiting between interviews.  Please come early, prepared and feel free to bring along a book to read while your are waiting to be interviewed.  We expect candidates to remain quiet while waiting for their interview so that others being interviewed will not be distracted.  Do not bring friends, siblings or children along with you.  Those not waiting to be interviewed will be asked to leave the building.

l

After check-in, applicants will be seated and complete the written application process before following signs and written directions to the next station.

l

At that station, applicants will have their application reviewed to see if its is complete and if their schedule of availability meets our needs.  Applicants will also be screened by; their appearance, their communication skills and their general attitude (see "Hints & Tips" below).

l

Applicants that make it past this station have a good chance to be hired, either that day or prior to our "Full-Time" season.  Getting to this point gets you a One-on-One "Sit-Down" interview with one of our Team Members.  Applicants will be asked questions about themselves and about working at Kiddieland Amusement Park (see "Hints & Tips" below).

l

If you make it past this step, you are getting close and will be asked to stay for a final One-on-One interview with one of our management staff.  Applicants will move to a more private area where they will be interviewed and evaluated.  At this point, applicants may be hired on the spot, have their application held for hiring at a date closer to our "Full-Time" season or passed over.

l

This entire process is your chance to sell us on you!  We want you to succeed and become part of our team.  Please read the section below and come prepared.  The "Hints & Tips" section was created from our experience interviewing applicants.  It lets you know what we are looking for and how our evaluation of you can  be most positive.  We look forward to meeting you and making you a part of our Team.

 Interview - Hints & Tips

YOU NEVER GET A SECOND CHANCE TO MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION, SO REMEMBER TO:

1.      PREPARE FOR YOUR INTERVIEW -  You will be better prepared for your interview if you start by asking yourself a few basic questions:

           A.     What do I know about the company?  The job?
           B.      Why to I want to work here?
           C.      What do I hope to gain from working here?

2.     DRESS APPROPRIATELY - Showing up for an interview appropriately dressed shows the interviewer that you care about the impression you make when you first meet someone.  Dressing appropriately means good personal grooming and clean, conservative clothing.  If in doubt, it’s better to overdress than underdress for your interview.  Avoid sweatpants, sweatshirts, team jerseys, faddish styles, excessive jewelry or make-up and untied shoes.

3.     ON TIME - Arrive on-time and by yourself (Leave your friends and relatives at home…or at least, in the car!).

4.     APPROPRIATE GREETING - Be sure to carry your belongings in your left hand, so that you may quickly and freely shake hands.    (Remmber, a gentle, but firm grasp exudes confidence; avoid a crunching, over-zealous pump or a limp, "Wet Noodle" finger-tip touch).  This is not the time for "High-Fives."

5.     SMILE!  -Smile and make eye contact with your interviewer.  Maintaining constant eye contact with your interviewer demonstrates self confidence, shows respect and an interest in the interview process.

6.     RESPOND APPROPRIATELY WHEN GREETED - If asked "How are you, today?", it's polite and appropriate to answer accordingly and then follow-up with, "And You?"

7.     BE INVESTED - If you are being escorted to the interview site, keep pace with and walk along side your escort.  Lagging behind shows disinterest, disrespect and a lack of self-confidence.

8.     BE AWARE OF YOUR BODY LANGUAGE - Stand and then sit comfortably, but upright, with your hands folded in your lap.  Fidgeting hands on the desk provide an unwanted distraction.  Try to avoid the following: slouching in your chair or leaning to one side; stretching your legs out in front of you, with your ankles crossed; resting your arm(s) on the chair next to you; sitting with your elbows on your knees and your head cupped in your hands.

9.     LISTEN CAREFULLY AND SPEAK CLEARLY - Good communication is essential if you want a successful interview.  Make sure you hear and understand the interviewer and make sure they can understand you!

10.    BE THOUGHTFUL AND HONEST - When you answer questions, think before you answer and resist the temptation to exagerate or misrepresent your qualifications.  Avoid telling the interviewer what you think he or she wants to hear.  If you are unsure about something, do not sit there silently, hoping the interviewer will move on.  Resist the impulse to say "I don't know."  Take a chance...give the question some thought and answer it to the best of your ability.

11.     BE CONFIDENT - Do not sell yourself short!  Even if you have had little or no experience, think about your past accomplishments and your future goals.  Now is the time to let your prospective employer know why he needs you on his TEAM!

12.    BE POSITIVE - Do not make negative comments or speak disparagingly about past jobs, employers, co-workers, etc...

13.    RELEVANT QUESTIONS -  Do not be afraid to ask relevant questions or for clarification of information you may not understand.

14.    REMEMBER FIRST IMPRESSIONS - Do not forget that your first impression is very important and it does not only mean when meeting in-person.  Often we follow up with applicants via email or the telephone.  When someone from our staff calls and hears inappropriate voice mail greetings or long music introductions prior to the greeting, it leaves us with a negative impression of the applicant.  Email addresses that are lewd or meant to shock say something about their owners and we pay attention to that when selecting our candidates for employment.  Lastly, when you answer the telephone remember to be polite, and appropriate.  We are listening and evaluating you whenever we are communicating with you.   Don't lose your chance to be part of our team because our first impression of you was not all it could have been.
